Our work in Haiti

Across Haiti, the cholera epidemic has devastated communities still struggling to recover from the devastation caused by the January 2010 earthquake. In Mirebalais in early 2012, Partners In Health will open a 320-bed, state-of-the-art teaching hospital that will train the next generation of Haitian doctors. PIH Canada will be supporting critical work in both of these areas. Visit www.pih.org/haiti for more information.

Our work in Rwanda

In Rwanda, where more than a third of the population lives on less than $1 per day, IMB is working closely with the national and district governments to create success stories in areas as diverse as AIDS treatment and prevention, maternal and neonatal health, and chronic disease and cancer care – all while strengthening public sector health care capacity. The need is great and much more needs to be done. Visit www.pih.org/rwanda for more information.

About PIH Canada

Partners In Health Canada is a non-profit organization relentlessly committed to global health equity. We will do whatever it takes to bring lifesaving care to the marginalized poor in Haiti or Rwanda or anywhere we work -- because we take the right to universal health care seriously, and because the status quo is unsustainable for those we serve.

Poverty and inequality are often at the root of illness, so we work to address them. Individuals and communities know their stories and solutions best, so we act only after listening to them and learning from them. Supported by a rigorous commitment to research and training, our goal is to mobilize resources that contribute to a comprehensive approach to high quality health care for the poor – one that meets the needs of individual patients while addressing root causes of disease and poor health in impoverished communities. Partners In Health (PIH) became a global health game-changer over the past 25 years by proving that it’s possible to deliver on this moral obligation, even in the most difficult settings imaginable. Acting with humility, courage, compassion and innovation, this is the standard to which we expect our patients, partners and donors to hold us accountable.

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND AND PROGRAMS

PIH Canada received Canadian charitable status in 2011 and is based in Toronto. We look forward to working in solidarity with all those across Canada—students and seniors, corporations and community groups, universities and other NGOs—who share our passion for this work.

PIH Canada works in Haiti and Rwanda using PIH and sister organizations Zanmi Lasante in Haiti (‘Partners In Health’ in Haitian Creole) and Inshuti Mu Buzima in Rwanda (‘Partners In Health’ in Kinyarwanda) as implementing partners. Projects may include the provision of medicines; construction and maintenance of hospitals, clinics and other health care facilities; primary care programs; maternal and child health initiatives; treatment and prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases; food security and other areas.
