This book describes the lives before, during and after treatment of 20 MDR TB patients who received support and accompaniment from Socios En Salud. The stories illustrate diverse emotions and experiences that, although they carry the indelible mark of the individuals telling them, also describe Peru’s unique culture as well as its social and economic situation—including the poverty and inequity found there. Although the stories show suffering, they also teach us creative strategies that enable us to go forward and prevent adversity from conquering us. The book is directed not only at health professionals and social scientists, but also at anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the illness and its determinants from a human, rather than biomedical perspective.
