Supported project: Guatemala / Equipo Técnico de
Educación
en Salud Comunitaria (ETESC)
Equipo Técnico de Educación en Salud Comunitaria (ETESC, Technical
Team for Education in Community Health) is a community-based organization formed
by health workers who, themselves victims of the Guatemalan Civil War, are committed
to identifying and addressing their communities’ social and health needs.
ETESC provides legal, psychological, and logistical assistance to the residents
of Huehuetenango, predominantly indigenous Maya, by helping them identify and
exhume mass graves. By facilitating the process
of mourning and reburial, ETESC returns dignity to the families of the victims.
ETESC and the communities it serves believe that seeking truth and justice is
essential to healing and reconciliation, and to establishing peace in Guatemala.
Since 1998, PIH has been supporting the work of ETESC as they heal the living
by helping them care for their dead.
