Targeted to nurses and other health professionals caring for MDR-TB patients
within the community. The fifteen chapters of this guide are the result
of the ten years of experience of the nursing team of Socios En Salud
Sucursal Perú (SES-Perú) who has largely contributed to the
development and consolidation of the first community-based model of care
for MDR-TB patients. In addition to the general clinical issues related
to diagnosis and treatment of MDR-TB, emphasis has been put in the social
and emotional aspects related to the disease and the comprehensive approach
of the nursing team for the care of MDR-TB patients in the community. The
leading role of the nurse in the DOTS-Plus team, in the development of
human resources and in research are also discussed in detail. Each chapter
develops a specific topic and includes a summary of the main issues related
to the topic as well as examples of cases. Protocols and reporting-forms
for the management of MDR-TB by the nursing team are included in the appendixes
as well a list of organizations and links related to MDR-TB and community
nursing.

MDR-TB: Stories of 20 former Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Patients]
First edition. Peru, 2006.
Editors: Emma Rubin de Celis. Rocío Sapag
Authors: Rocío Valverde and SES Team of Nurses.
Published by Socios En Salud Sucursal Perú
16.0 x 21.0 cms - 178 pages (contains full color photos)
Price Outside Perú – US$ 15 (+ delivery charge)
This book describes the lives before, during and after treatment of 20
MDR TB patients who received support and accompaniment from Socios En Salud.
The stories illustrate diverse emotions and experiences that, although
they carry the indelible mark of the individuals telling them, also describe
Peru’s unique culture as well as its social and economic situation—including
the poverty and inequity found there. Although the stories show suffering,
they also teach us creative strategies that enable us to go forward and
prevent adversity from conquering us. The book is directed not only at
health professionals and social scientists, but also at anyone interested
in gaining a deeper understanding of the illness and its determinants from
a human, rather than biomedical perspective.
