Partners In Health Announces Expense Reductions

Boston, MA (September 10, 2025) – In order to uphold our commitment to providing patients high-quality care and advance the movement for global health equity, Partners In Health (PIH) announced that it has mapped out reductions in spending that will fully align expenses with revenue by July 2027. As part of these reductions, PIH will be closing PIH-US by spring 2026 and tapering off financial support for Compañeros En Salud (CES) over the next year and a half.

PIH set a two-year target to reduce spending by $15M, which is approximately eight percent of the organization’s budget, in order to prioritize high standards of care while better positioning the organization to continue to advance the movement for health equity.

“Partners In Health was founded on the idea of caring for patients like we would care for members of our own families, and that’s why the decision to close PIH-US and phase out financial support for Compañeros En Salud, our sister organization in Chiapas, Mexico, was so tremendously challenging to make. We could not be more proud of the work those teams and our many community partners have done, and we are profoundly grateful for the dedication of staff, providers, and supporters who have cared so well for our patients,” said Dr. Sheila Davis, CEO of PIH. “The U.S. government’s unprecedented cuts to health funding and foreign aid have made tough choices even tougher, but we remain committed to providing high-quality care—the kind of care that patients deserve and that advocates can point to as an important step in the movement for global health equity.”

PIH-US grew out of the U. S. Public Health Accompaniment Unit, a PIH department launched to improve public health in the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic, and formally became a PIH site in October 2021. PIH-US's mission is to build strong community-led public health system in the U.S. that ensure everyone can exercise their right to health. Currently PIH-US works in Alabama; Pima County, Arizona; Southwest Florida; Newark, New Jersey; North Carolina; and Massachusetts. Alongside partners, PIH-US has bolstered public health infrastructure and  strengthened the community health workforce—training 5,000 community health workers, for example—and leveraging more than $120M in funding to expand investment in local health equity strategies.

Compañeros En Salud (CES), PIH’s sister organization in Mexico, has been working in Mexico’s southern-most state of Chiapas since 2011. In partnership with the Secretariat of Health, CES assists with the operation of ten rural clinics, two maternity homes, a community hospital, and a medical dispensary. Beyond providing primary care, CES connects patients to higher levels of care, including Mental Health, Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Surgery. Since 2011, CES and its partners have trained over 200 pasantes, or recent health care service graduates, and it currently employs 95 community health workers, all of them local women, building a transformative community health workforce. The CES Board is partnering with the communities it serves and the government to develop strategies for how the work will evolve.

Following these reductions, Partners In Health will be well-positioned to continue its work of demonstrating quality health care is possible in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. PIH celebrates and deeply appreciates the many years of transformative, life-saving accompaniment of both CES and PIH-US.
