Healing hearts in Rwanda

A volunteer surgical team from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston recently began a mission to help Rwandans suffering from heart failure (often caused by Rheumatic Heart Disease, or RHD). This condition leaves thousands of Rwandans gasping for breath in a process of slow suffocation that can only be treated with surgery, which medical facilities in Rwanda currently cannot provide. Enter Team Heart. This spring, the team began began performing life-saving surgeries while working with PIH, a local hospital, and the Rwandan Ministry of Health to establish a self-sustained cardiac surgery program in the country.
