Matthew Bonds, an associate professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and cofounder of PIVOT, Boston, MA, wrote a tribute to Paul Farmer in Science on March 31, 2002. Here's an excerpt:

"Paul’s genius was that he not only saw how each part of the system was connected—from frontline care providers to global funders to drivers, scientists, cleaners, and everyone in between—he knew how to fortify and grow those connections around a common moral clarity on behalf of patients everywhere. He actively, indefatigably, worked toward that goal, so that a healthy forest could emerge from the trees. He taught those in the global health movement how to see this system in all of its complexity by immersing themselves fully in it, facing all of the intellectual, practical, moral, and personal dimensions."
