PIH-supported legislation will strengthen community health workforce

This year, PIH staff faced escalating violence in Haiti, cholera spikes in Malawi, and more. But there was good news too: medical education programs launched, major policy breakthroughs on drug pricing and TB treatment, and reduced rates of maternal mortality.

In the U.S., community health workers accompany individuals on their health care journey, advocate for their community’s health needs, and match individuals to essential social support, all of which are integral activities to ensure the right to health for everyone.

Teams across several PIH sites use a WHO intervention, called Problem Management Plus--which they adapt by country and context, to help deliver much-needed mental health care within rural communities.

Now in the third year of the pandemic, Dr. Giuseppe (Bepi) Raviola, co-director of mental health, shares how PIH has developed a model for global mental health care, inspired by Co-Founder Dr. Paul Farmer, that remains resilient--now more than ever--in the time of COVID-19.
