In 2020, the lifetime risk of women dying in pregnancy or childbirth in Sierra Leone improved from 1 in 20 to 1 in 52.

A team of 12 community health workers in New Bedford, Mass., showed up at fisheries and markets, shopping areas and public spaces to conduct community health surveys and assess gaps in health care access among residents of Guatemalan descent. 

With fewer and fewer pathologists in Port-au-Prince, access for patients is increasingly difficult. "It imposes on us, I believe, a moral duty to provide these services, with the highest possible standard,” said Joarly Lormil, HUM’s chief of oncology.

The accomplishment is a major milestone for mental health care education and delivery.

The latest group of nurses was welcomed to the yearlong program, which originally launched in 2017.

PIH and its Ministry of Health partners renovated Kombayendeh Community Health Center, previously one of the most direly under-resourced clinics in Kono District, Sierra Leone, and now care for double the number of patients, as more people feel confident in the quality of care provided at the facility.

The Maternal Center of Excellence in Sierra Leone has a significance that's bigger than a building. With its groundbreaking, more women and children will receive quality care in coming years, and an increasing number of clinicians will access specialized training to better care for patients.
