Across all PIH-US sites, we work with partners to build a more equitable, robust public health response to stop COVID-19. Our focus remains on those hardest hit by the pandemic: under-resourced communities of color and migrant and Indigenous populations. Our approach is to engage deeply with governments and communities and share the ideas we generate together to scale our impact.
Though many of our partnerships began with an aim to rapidly stand up contact tracing programs, the nature of the crisis and the on-the-ground reality led PIH-US to expand the scope of our work to other aspects of the COVID-19 response including community mitigation, testing, supported isolation and quarantine, and vaccination. Our technical advising services are always guided by the principles of solidarity, and they vary depending on the needs of our partners and members of the communities in which we work. As our partners shift from COVID-19 response work to reimagining U.S. community health systems rooted in access and equity for all, we are committed to supporting their evolving and emergent needs.
PIH-US and our partners have had a substantive impact on the COVID-19 response in the communities where we work:
contact tracers and COVID-19 response community health workers hired and trained
households connected to social supports
in funding leveraged to expand investment in local public health priorities
technical advisers embedded in 16 jurisdictions
Our COVID-19 work has laid the foundation for our work into the future. By deepening our collaborations through the pandemic and beyond, PIH-US will partner with public health departments and community organizations to advance their long-term visions for healthier communities and more just systems.
“It feels like PIH is a member of the team, and that makes such a big difference compared to other partnerships that offer no practical, tangible experience. PIH feels like another team member. It’s nice to know that whatever we need, they are quickly able to turn it around. I can’t emphasize enough how helpful that is.”
– City of Montgomery, Alabama
“The knowledge that PIH has from its collective expertise from ongoing work helped us to decide how to build our program in its early stages. The team strikes a good balance between being assertive about their opinions while also supporting our work.”
– Illinois Department of Public Health
